Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is the main language in Batam. They also speak Teochew, Hokkien (Fujian) and Chinese because of large population of Chinese Indonesians ethnic. There are also large population of migrants from various parts of Indonesia who speak many different kinds of Indonesian dialects.
Now available two big group of meter taxi which not available in Batam previously. Two big group are Blue Bird and Silver Cab. Other taxi are available too but you need to bargaining the price.

Freelance Driver is booked per hour or per day. Some will be arranged by hotel with higher prices. Or you can find some of them outside, as some place like Spa and Shop will offer you the freelance driver contact number.
Minibus (Metro Trans)
Mini bus will roll up beeping the horn or flashing its lights. Signal and they will pick you up. Jodoh, Telaga Punggur, MukaKuning, Galang, Sembulang is fixed route which will be pass by. Sample fares for other destinations are as follows:
- Jodoh to Sembulang via Sukajadi Rp. 9.500
- Jodoh to Galang Baru via Sukajadi Rp. 12.000
- Dapur 12 to Mukakuning Rp. 3.000
- Dapur 12 to Jodoh via Sukajadi Rp. 4.000
Motorcycle taxis which you can hire to take you to your destination as a pillion passenger. Fares is not fix, you can try to bargain. Need to be more careful, however using Ojeks is riskier than using a taxi.
Batam Island enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an average temperature of 26 to 34 degrees celsius. Humidity ranges from 73% to 96%. The annual average rainfall is 2,600 mm (about 105 inches) with the wet season extending from November to April/May and the dry season from June to October. The dry and wet season descriptions are relative – it still rains between June and October though not so frequently. The most concentrated rains tend to fall during December/November and around April.
Dress codes in Batam are more relaxed. Due to the nature of climate in Batam, you need casual & light clothing and will not need coats. It is accepted to wear short pants and t-shirts which suited to the hot climate and now standard dress for many young local men and women. Long pants may be advisable in Batam during the evening hours, particularly if you are sensitive to mosquitoes or other biting insects and will be spending time out of doors (for example at the excellent open-air food markets).

Non-Visa Short Term Visit
Passport holders as below countries who are visiting Indonesia as tourists do not require visas and may be given up to 30-days social visit pass upon their arrival in Indonesia. For Customers who depart from Singapore there are terms and conditions apply such as validity of Singapore social visit pass minimum 10-days and above, must have more than 6 months validity of passports, and supporting travel documents to your next destination.

Visa On Arrival
This visa can be obtained directly when you are landed at the certain airports and seaport in Indonesia regardless of the purpose of your visits (Business, Tourist, Social). The Visa on Arrival is not a work visa nor a visitation visa. Therefore, it can not be converted to obtain other immigration permits. Visa On Arrival entry from Singapore must have valid social visit passes, multiple entry visa in Singapore with minimum of 10-days validity, more than 6 months validity of passports, and travel documents to your next destination.
Below is the list of country applicable for Visa on Arrival Visit:
You need a passport valid for at least six months from your date of entry. Travellers from most Western countries (currently 62 countries) can obtain a single entry Visa on Arrival for 30 days ($US25). This can be extended by a further 30 days without leaving Indonesia. To extend your Visa in Batam you need to go to the Immigration Section in the Sumatra Promotions Office at Batam Centre (third floor). The cost is 250,000 rupiah for the Visa and 60,000 rupiah administration fee (note rupiah not dollars).
Bearers of passports not entitled to a Visa on Arrival must obtain their entry Visa through an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate prior to travel – check with your travel agent or nearest Indonesian Embassy.
Note: The thirty-day Visa actually entitles you to a stay of only twenty nine nights.
If purchasing a Visa on Arrival try to ensure you have US or Singapore dollars available. Rupiah are not accepted. Visitors from ASEAN countries which have reciprocal arrangements with Indonesia are issued a FREE 30-day tourist Visa on arrival. You may be asked to show you have a return ticket to your country of embarkation (Singapore), though this is very unlikely.
